What Is It?
Glucomannan is a water-soluble fibre that’s extracted from the root of the konjac plant. It’s been used for centuries in Japanese cooking as a thickener and helps gel food together, as well as across South East Asia within traditional medicine. You’ll often find it in shirataki noodles, or cut up and served with dipping sauce. It even has its own nickname – the broom of the intestines!
How Does It Work ?
When you’re eating less, you may not be consuming enough fibre, which will leave you feeling hungry. Glucomannan is the middleman, both as a fibre and for its satiety properties. It absorbs water in the digestion tract reducing the absorption of carbohydrates and cholesterol.
Once it expands (up to 50 times its own weight), a fibre is formed that takes up space in your stomach. As a result, you feel full and you’re more likely to eat less. It also delays the emptying of the stomach, meaning you’ll feel fuller for longer.
As with other soluble fibres, it also reduces your body’s ability to absorb protein and fat, leading to weight loss. Also by feeding good bacteria in the intestine, glucomannan has also prevented fat gain within animals too. Some studies have also revealed a positive correlation between changing gut bacteria and body weight.
it helps control blood sugar (less cravings!) and constipation as it travels through your digestive system before its expelled from your body via bowel movement.
Glucomannan is one of the most studied and researched of any appetite suppressing ingredients.. aside from these effects, studies have also shown that it can:
- Lower total cholesterol by 19 mg/dL (0.5 mmol/L).
- Lower LDL cholesterol by 16 mg/dL (0.4 mmol/L).
- Lower triglycerides by 11 mg/dL (0.12 mmol/L)
- Fasting blood sugar by 7.4 mg/dL (0.4 mmol/L).
These same studies also suggested that by adding Glucomannan to your daily diet, you could reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes and heart disease.
What Is The Recommended Dosage Of Glucomannan?
On its own, experts suggest a dose of 1000-2000mg per day, although highly effective on its own, it can be even more effective when taken in conjunction with other fat burning ingredients ( e.g. Caffeine, Cayenne, Green Coffee Extract being 3 such examples).
